Specifier information

WHAT IS ALBI MAX?

ALBI MAX is a clear, intumescent coating which will upgrade the Surface Spread of Flame performance on internal timber or timber-based boards. ALBI MAX is a two-part system comprising of ALBI MAX BASECOAT and ALBI OVERCOAT.

WHERE CAN ALBI MAX BE USED?

For use in dry, internal situations where a wall or ceiling lining in natural timber requires upgrading to achieve Class 1 Surface Spread of Flame in accordance with BS 476 : Part 7 or Class 0 in accordance with UK Building Regulations. Whilst ALBI MAX may be used on natural wood and wood veneer surfaces, it is not suitable for simulated wood surfaces or prefinished veneers.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

When exposed to fire, ALBI MAX instantly reacts to form a dense insulative barrier which minimises heat transfer delaying ignition of the base material and impeding the spread of the fire.

THE RANGE
Product Performance Size QTY per case
ALBI MAX BASECOAT Class 1 or 0 5 Litre 1
ALBI MAX BASECOAT Class 1 or 0 20 Litre 1
ALBI OVERCOAT Protective 1 Litre 4
ALBI OVERCOAT Protective 5 Litre 1

ALBI OVERCOAT is a protective coating only. Available in matt, satin or gloss finish.

DECORATIVE STAINS - See approved list

ALBI MAX should not change the colour of most timber surfaces. When a stained timber finish is required, only acid-fast penetrating wood stains may be used prior to the application of ALBI MAX. A single thin coat only of stain must be used and the stain must be allowed at least one week to dry to ensure dispersion of the solvent before the ALBI MAX system can be applied. The stained surface should be lightly sanded before application of ALBI MAX.

HIGH HUMIDITY SPECIFICATION

Since ALBI MAX BASECOAT is sensitive to moisture the most important consideration is to keep the timbers dry both during construction and service life. Application of the product in areas where high humidity or heavy wear is likely to occur e.g. swimming pools or kitchens may require modification to the standard specification. The ALBI MAX system must not be applied in areas where there is the likelihood of direct contact with water.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR HIGH HUMIDITY SPECIFICATION

  1. Ensure the correct site conditions are achieved and maintained - see Getting Started
  2. Seal the reverse face, end grains and edges of the timber with two coats of ALBI OVERCOAT (gloss)
  3. Fix the timbers and allow them to stabilise in position achieving the moisture content expected in service life (no greater than 14%). This avoids sealing excessive moisture into the timber which may subsequently cause a breakdown in the ALBI MAX system.
  4. Apply a compatible stain if desired and allow at least a week to dry
  5. Apply the ALBI MAX BASECOAT as per the application rate table
  6. Apply two coats of ALBI OVERCOAT in the preferred finish (matt, satin or gloss) at 12m²/litre

Timber coated in the ALBI MAX system should be allowed at least one week to dry out before being subject to high humidity. In the case of swimming pools, the pool should not be filled until at least two weeks after application has been completed and the central heating system is in full operation.
